Excesivamente? No creo, todavia no he robado a nadie.

I didn't reply to this last email, even though I have arguments against it. I did not reply because from the point #2 the name-calling already started: "machista". Machista?!? I who say:

Two "maris" in Chueca

¡Te has vuelto loca! ¡Si gracias al PSOE nos podemos casar!

Aquiles en Madrid (29/01/2008)

This conversation on the elections between two maris in Chueca illustrates how difficult it is to have a proper political discussion with most progres.

Freedom and education

Unfortunately, that portion of teachers who have promoted the "education between peers" ideology will never admit that their socialist/communist ideas do not work.

Finished Nicholas

I actually finished Charles Dicken's Nicholas Nickleby on the 15th of January 2008, though I include it among the books I read in 2007. I hope you can forgive me this little treat. I started it in September, have read 3 books in the meantime and sit a couple of exams. And, hey, it took me less than a year!

It is a good thick classic book, written by one of the best novelists in English (if not the best), though I don't think it is his best book. It suffers from the typical issues of novels published by periodic parts. Master Dickens does not display the highest degree of his originality and skillful description (as he did with the Pickwick Papers or A Tale of Two Cities), does not manage to craft a striking, thrilling plot (lots of loose ends are dealt with in a couple of paragraphs in the last chapter) and, in summary, fails to make this work as splendid as it could have got considering his wonderful knowledge of the English (country, people and language).

But, please do not be misled, this review is negative in comparison to his other books, peaks of the English literature: millions of writers would love to have been the author of such a "mediocre" work as Nicholas Nickleby.

Sir Edmund Hillary

Modern developments in machinery and equipment have produced major changes in the technique of exploration. Aircraft and vehicles are in many cases replacing the human legs; oxygen bottles are giving new strength to air-starved lungs in the thin air that clothes the giants of the Himalayas; and radio communication has removed the loneliness from the most desolate land. But despite all this I firmly believe that in the end it is the man himself that counts. When the going gets tough and things go wrong the same qualities are needed to win through as they were in the past -- qualities of courage, resourcefulness, the ability to put up with discomfort and hardship, and the enthusiasm to hold tight to an ideal and to see it through with doggedness and determination.

The explorers of the past were great men and we should honour them. But let us not forget that their spirit still lives on. It is still not hard to find a man who will adventure for the sake of a dream or one who will search, for the pleasure of searching, and not for what he may find.

Sir Edmund Hillary, Prologue to Challenge of the Unknown (1958)

I have spent the evening reading notes and obituaries of Sir Edmund Hillary, the greatest mountaneer of the 20th Century.

With awesome steadiness of will, those two smiling, dirty faces of Edmund Hillary and Tenzin Norgay had conquered the highest mountain on Earth, the Third Pole, the Everest, Chomolungma or Sagarmatha. And with equally praiseworthy humbleness of character, they shrugged off their well-deserved image of heroism leading honourable lives. Their legendary names shall be remembered in the years to come.

Love and freedom.

Torre de Floripes

Christmas is a time to be with the family. Here we are pictured against the Torre de Floripes, which disappeared amidst the waters of the Alcantara reservoir on the Tajo river.

The reservoir's water level is at its lowest in the last 25 years and the Tower can be seen almost entirely. The reason for this scarce is the extraordinarily high output from the hydroelectric plant located at the Alcantara dam. It seems that there is a power shortage in Spain and hydroelectric and wind power plants have had to work more than usual. I think that this situation is due to the closure of nuclear power plants in Spain, which goes against the international trend of opening new nuclear plants (e.g., Holland, France, the UK, etc.)

My books in 2007

Among the books I read in 2007, I found these ones the most remarkable:

The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver
The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe
Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens

How about yours?

Love and freedom.
Sin sus ojos no hay poesía.
Sin sus pasos desiste la esperanza.
Sin sus labios duele el amor.

Rendition at the Dakar Rally

I'm very disappointed and sad. Cancelling an event like the Dakar rally for a non-sporting reason sets a very worrying precedent for sport in general. You prepare for this rally for a whole year and now a year of hopes and illusions have been dashed.

Carlos Sainz (Twice World Rally Champion), Reuters

The cancellation of the most important rally-raid of the world, the Lisbon-Dakar Rally, is not only bad news for the sports world, it is also another sign of France's current policy of unconditional rendition to the terrorist islamic groups.

The director of the Dakar Rally, Etienne Lavigne, claims that there was no choice but to cancel the rally given the threats by Al-Qaeda, and that there is no regret after taking this decision (message on 09/01/2008). The organiser of this sporting event, the French company ASO, was advised of this course of action by the French government.

They might not have regrets now, but they will in the future, as soon as in one year's time, when Al-Qaeda repeat the threat and ASO realise (too late) that the Dakar Rally does not belong to them any more. Or are they going to change their minds and go ahead then?

This decision shows that the Western World attributes a lot of power to Al-Qaeda, assumption that might lead to thousand of strategic errors. Totalitarian regimes (as Al-Qaeda or the Sovietic Union) know that they can only survive by showing no weakness. However, sooner or later (usually later) this fake appearance will be blown away by the unbearable power of reality; for example, the Sovietic Union collapsed when it seemed as powerful as ever.

Meanwhile, thanks to the freedom of press the population of the Western World gets acquanted with any event (favourable or not) happening in the freedom's side, whereas it is misinformed by the mainstream media about the true facts happening at the other side (since the totalitarian leaders will hide any negative information). At the same time, the totalitarian leaders will amplify any victory (no matter how small or simbolic) to show the success of their performance and encourage their fighters.

Islamic terrorists are in permanent war with the rest of the world. They fight jews in Israel, Christians wherever they can, Hindi in India, Russians in Afganistan, and they try to unstable every country in Africa. Their purpose is to restore the Islamic Caliphate and expand it worldwide.

The cancellation of the Dakar Rally tells those countries where the islamic terrorists are on the verge to impose their power that the Western World will abandon them and leave them in the islamofascists' hands. Similar to the Munich Agreement in 1938, when Britain and France betrayed the Czechs and Slovaks and gave the Sudetenland to Germany in a naive attempt to appease Hitler.

Every western withdrawal is a jihadist move forwards. Will the West give up their interests and the freedom values if other events (sporting or not) are threatened by the islamic terrorists? This Dakar Rally cancellation will instille doubts in the Western citizens and will encourage the terrorists.

There is, however, room for hope: Heroes Legend is another rally in Africa that has also been threatened by Al-Qaeda, but whose organiser, Hubert Auriol, has not given in to the islamofascists.

Love and freedom.

On distant love

Mistery and disappointment are not absolutely indispensable to the growth of love, but they are, very often, its powerful auxiliaries. [...] Love is very materially assisted by a warm and active imagination, which has a long memory, and will thrive for a considerable time on very slight and sparing food. Thus it is, that it often attains its most luxuriant growth in separation and under circumstances of the utmost difficult; and thus it was, that Nicholas, thinking of nothing but the unknown young lady, from day to day and from hour to hour, began, at last, to think that he was very desperately in love with her, and that never was such an ill-used and persecuted lover as he.

Charles Dickens, Nicholas Nickleby
