Where is home?

My opinion about where home is located is the following:

Should, at some point in your life, the location where the person who you want to live and found a family with lives coincide geographically with the location where you have a job which you are interested in pursuing long-term, then you are bound to remain at that place, even though you may not have thought about it before. In other words:

(family/partner + interesting job) at some location = that location is your home

...even if it's in the Patagonia.

Until that point in your life, home is usually located where the family of which you are offspring is found.

Mi comentario a Marbregal:

[In English below]

Elections for the regional Parliament of Catalonia were held on Sunday 28th November 2010.

The coalition Escons en Blanc/Ciudadanos en Blanco (Eb/CenB, Seats in Blank/Citizens in White) has obtained more than 18,000 votes in that election. This result is a success, considering that its campaign budget was about €5,000. Compare this budget with those of the usual political parties: of those parties with representatives in the Parliament of Catalonia, Ciutadans are the ones with a smaller budget, estimated at 200,000 euros. Eb/CenB's votes/budget ratio is probably the greatest of all political parties running in these elections.

Ciudadanos en Blanco (Citizens in White) is the name of the group that will try to stand for council and regional elections in Spain. Ciudadanos en Blanco is a citizen group of volunteers who lend their names to make the blank vote to be computed since, in accordance to current legislation, the blank vote (cast by means of an empty envelope) is valid but does not count towards the distribution of seats. Ciudadanos en Blanco promises to leave the seat empty, to forgo any monies and to work for the blank vote to count in the distribution of seats.

Introducing the axis of upheaval

Article written by Niall Ferguson, Professor of History at Harvard University, published by The Times on March 14th, 2009 (as underlined by Borjabrela)

In 2002 George W. Bush warned of an Axis of Evil that was assisting terrorists, acquiring weapons of mass destruction, and "arming to threaten the peace of the world". According to President Bush, the Axis of Evil had three members: Iran, Iraq and North Korea.

Barack Obama faces a larger and potentially more troubling axis: an axis of upheaval. What unites them is not so much their wicked intentions as their instability, which the global financial crisis only makes worse every day.

When Mr Bush's speechwriters coined the phrase Axis of Evil, they were drawing a parallel with the wartime alliance between Germany, Italy and Japan. The axis of upheaval, by contrast, is more reminiscent of the decade before the outbreak of the Second World War, when the Great Depression unleashed a wave of global political crises.

There is good reason to fear that the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression could have comparable consequences for the international system.

Three factors made the location and timing of lethal organised violence more or less predictable in the last century. The first was ethnic disintegration: violence was wordst in areas where majorities lived uneasily side by side with religious or linguistic minorities. The second factor was empires in decline: when imperial rule crumbled, battles for power were most bloody. The third was economic volatility: the greater the magnitude and frequency of economic shocks, the more likely conflict was.

In at least one of the world's regions - the greater Middle East - two of these three factors have been present for som time.

Now the third variable, economic volatility, has returned. The "Great Moderation" has been obliterated by a financial chain reaction now triggering collapses in asset prices, production and trade around the world.

It won't be as bad as the Great Depression that began in 1929 because governments worldwide are trying to repress this new depression with policies undreamt of 80 years ago, but Depression Lite will cause a substantial increase in unemployment and a painful decline in incomes. Such pain nearly always has geopolitical consequences.

There are some parts of the world where upheaval is the norm: Congo, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Middle East, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan. As the global crisis snuffs out what little remains of economic activity, events have fanned the flames of Islamist radicalism: rising unemployment means more frustrated young men with nothing better to do than to fantasise about jihad. Expect also gains for sabre-rattling nationalists.

History suggests that it is precisely when such regimes feel insecure that they are most likely to take foreign policy risks. Vladimir Putin declared at Davos, "Provoking military-political conflicts is also a convenient way of deflecting people's attention from mounting social and economic problems".

The most likely recruits to radical Islamist organisations are not the millions of dirt-poor slumdogs but the relatively well-off educated twentysomethings who have glimpsed prosperity only to have their hopes dashed.

The crisis of globalisation is bringing trouble to parts of the world we thought had been made safe for democracy. The financial crisis is proving to be most sever among the newly industrialised countries of Asia: South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. Of the three, Thailand is the most politically vulnerable.

Eastern European countries, many of which were formerly Communist, are paying the price of a reckless borrowing binge: Latvia, Ukraine. The Soviet Union may be gone, but it has left a legacy of Russian minorities all over Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Adding economic volatility to the mix of ethnic disintegration and post-imperial conflict is a recipe for upheaval.

The problem is that, as in the 1930s, most countries are looking inward, grappling with the domestic consequences of the economic crisis and paying little attention to the wider world crisis. This is true even of the US.

The US gross federal debt is going to balloon to 100 per cent of GBP within ten years. For US foreign policy, this implies that resources available for policing the world are certain to be reduced.

Economic volatility, plus ethnic disintegration, plus empires in decline: that combination is about the most lethal in geopolitics. We now have al three. The age of upheaval starts here.

Sesión fantasma en el Congreso

Buenas tardes:

Jonathan Tepper on TV3: "Spanish fiesta has ended so, if you want jobs, lower real salaries"

Jonathan Tepper, partner in the Variant Perception, is considered an expert on Spanish economy since he produced a report on the Spanish banks in August 2009: "Spain: The Hole In Europe's Balance Sheet", where he said something like "Investors are smoking crack if they believe that Spanish banks are among the strongest in Europe". Here you have it (on TV3!!):

Le he comentado a él directamente:

Y parafraseo al Sr. Tepper: "The Spanish fiesta has ended so, if you want jobs, lower real salaries"

Dining at Cambio de Tercio in London

One of the best places to have Spanish food in London is the restaurant Cambio de Tercio on Old Brompton Road, near Gloucester Road tube station. Critics and diners alike love it and tennis player Rafael Nadal eats there when he is playing in Wimbledon. It is then no surprise that I promised to celebrate Spain’s World Cup win with a dinner there (World Cup victory doesn’t come very often!).

True to my word last Saturday evening I took S. to enjoy an incredibly delicious meal at Cambio de Tercio. Our menu was the following:

Starters:

Manchego cheese lollipops

New season white asparagus dressed with seeds and nuts vinaigrette and Padron pepper ali-oli

Char-grilled Galician-style octopus on a bath of potato parmentier and sprinkled with paprika oil

Grilled lamb cutlets accompanied with aubergine puree, Manzanilla olives and one glazed potato

Main courses

Wild sea bass with artichokes, smoked grilled courgettes, and cauliflower puree

Basque style monkfish casserole surrounded by griddled razor clams, broad beans, and asparagus tips and showered with parley jus

Wine

Terras Gauda 2009 (70% albariño, 20% loureiro, 10% caiño)

Dessert

White chocolate ganache topped by passion fruit, ginger ice cream and sprinkled with pistachio,

Everything was delicious and the flavours released by every bit left us speechless. After yummy crunchy asparagus, the potato parmentier where the octopus lazily swam was so tasty that it deceived me into thinking that was spiced up with some mild herbs; however, the waiter set me right when he swore that the parmentier was made of potato, olive oil and salt only cooked and stirred for half an hour to give it a gelatinous texture. The lamb cutlets were so tender that my companion, who doesn’t exactly love meat, had to admit defeat and proclaim it was mouth-watering. The fish was outstanding: although the sea bass topped my monkfish in my opinion and the artichokes brought some fond memories of my mother’s cooking. And, finally, the Dessert: that dessert is one of the best ones I have had in my life; the way the passion fruit melted the ginger ice cream and spiced up the chocolate sent my senses into such a rapture that the experience was, as the waiter put it, “orgasmic”. With a blissful smile on her face, my companion concurred with him.

We finished the loveliest evening having a watermelon cocktail at Coquine, a posh cocktail bar across the road from Cambio de Tercio.

Attenborough and the bees

J.L., one of my colleagues at the Libertarian Fleas Society (meeting of Spanish libertarians in London) posts the following Facebook status:

“David Attenborough moment: in the cross of wardour St. with Sheraton St., there is a beehive in a traffic sign post. Bees are piled up around it while people take pics. The wonders of nature.”

Comments that followed:

Borjabrela: “And the wonders of the Market! (without which bees could exist, but Attenborough as a model wouldn’t.)”

J.L.: “Yes and no. Markets and biological behaviours share some principles.”

Borjabrela: “Please clarify: yes to what? And no to what?

J.L.: “NO: Bees and Mr. Attenborough exist thanks to previous “markets” where they evolved. YES: The Wonders of the Market!”

Borjabrela: “Not entirely sure. As I understand the markets as systems of voluntary relationships and transactions, I wouldn’t apply this term to Nature’s evolution, which, in my opinion, has no will (and hence can perform no voluntary acts), but follows certain rules set in stone (such as the Principles of Thermodynamics or the Basic Forces of Nature) sprinkled with azar”.

Please feel free to contribute with your opinion.

State pension systems = Ponzi schemes

“The great Ponzi scheme that lies behind our State pension is unravelling – as they all do eventually – because money being taken from new investors is insufficient to honour promises issued to earlier generations. […] None of this should come as a surprise. It is many years since experts began pointing out that Britain’s State pension – like most of its public sector pensions – are unfunded promises which rely on NICs and taxes paid by workers this week to pay pensions to old people next week.

This financial model is so fundamentally unstable that it is illegal in the private sector. No private company or insurer would be allowed to carry on as a series of British governments have done. Hence my disrespectful but I hope helpful comparisons with the original wheeze of the American fraudster, Mr Ponzi.”

State pension Ponzi scheme unravels with retirement at 70, Ian Cowie (Telegraph.co.uk, 24/06/2010)

At last someone in mainstream media starts stating the obvious fact: state pension systems in Britain, Spain and most Western countries are Ponzi schemes. Another trick devised by the governments to rob the average citizen. In the case of Spain, it was set up by the national-socialist dictator Franco and nowadays supported by all those who, after Franco’s death (of course), have appointed themselves as “anti-Franco fighters”.

Pythagoreanist geek

I love the number 4 (four). 4 equals to 2 plus 2, and 2 times 2, and 2 to the power of 2. Had I been contemporary with Pythagoras I would have worshiped that number. To me it represents the fullness of the Universe better than the numbers 1, 7 or 12.

However, no matter how much I like the number 4, I understand the number 2 is more useful to explain the functioning of the world as two are the only possible options of movement (and hence of visible division) along a 1-dimension space, which is the simplest and therefore the most common of spaces in the Universe.

A bit geeky, I know. Please forgive me.

A bi-dimensional chart that displays the political spectrum with "personal freedom" and "economic freedom" as axes.

A glimpse of London: Monday

One should examine oneself for a very long time before thinking of condemning others.

Moliere

London is a great, funny city, the Spanish guy thought, when he saw two lesbians (one of them Chinese and the other one Caucasian) kissing each other farewell by the tube station while an Italo-Indian couple greeted their Eastern European friends at the queue of a club. But the Spanish guy didn't have time for thoughts, it was snowing and he was late for the theatre where a lovely English girl was already waiting for him.

Thus the other Monday the Spanish guy saw Martin Crimp's version of Moliere's The Misanthrope at the Comedy Theatre, starring Damian Lewis and Keira Knightley. Whilst he still preferred the original French play, he approved this English attempt to adapt Moliere's comedy of manners to the contemporary world.

Being as we still are human beings displaying our unmistakable, unchangeable flaws, it's no surprise that there is such a resemblance between the 17th century French aristocratic society and today's Western celebrity society. Both seem so penetrated by the hypocrisy, shallowness and vanity of talentless, base celebs made famous by the media that one doesn't have to be a harsh, idealistic fool like Alceste to become disillusioned and angry with the whole mankind.

Keira, by the way, was all shoulders and squared angles and, though she played her role correctly, left the Spanish guy a tad cold and disappointed. He realised that he was very happy with the little English girl that clung on to his arm.

Labour's fixation is strangling everyone

Labour's controlling, centralising, mistrustful approach has left huge numbers of former supporters feeling sullen, impotent and resentful. [...] This is a disenchantment that comes from the experience of living with Labour's ideas about how society should be organised, and finding them mean and thin. [...] Labour's fundamental mistake has been to manage the country, its people and its institutions as if it were running nothing more than a collection of factories and businesses. [...] A mother from Somerset is one of many voter whose loyalty to Labour has snapped over its extension of state power into areas that should be matters of choice. [...] "By putting the state in the middle of everything, we're destroying society," she says.

Jenni Russell, Labour's big fixation is strangling everyone (The Sunday Times, 03/01/2010)

Russell's warning in The Sunday Times is the ever-repeating issue with socialism: people who vote for further central planning of the society don't realise that their ideas will end up making government do things they were not prepared to accept initially. The unintended consecuences for the freedom of the people caused by the practice of well-meaning socialist ideas are far worse (at least in the mind of those who love their freedom) than the injustice they intend to solve.

Hayek explained in his "Road to Serfdom" (obviously dedicated "To the socialists of all parties") that management of a centrally-planned society leads to bureaucrats gaining discretionary powers and the dismantling of the free market system and this may end in the destruction of all individual economic and personal freedom.

Socialists think that their claim that that state planning does not lead, deterministically, towards the constraint of social and political freedom is enough to rebut Hayek's proposition. First, that claim is not enough counter-argument; second, reality shows that the more state planning exists, the more individual freedom is constrained. This can be seen anywhere from Labour's UK to the Soviet Union, Mao's China, Cambodia, through Chavez's Venezuela or Barroso's EU: they are all in the slippery slope of communism.

By the way, I just noticed the similarity of Hayek's slippery slope to the last stage of Plato's 5 Regime cycle. Interesting!

Beginner's Guide to Liberty

I have just finished reading the short book A Beginner's Guide to Liberty published by the Adam Smith Institute.

Though I agree this short Guide to Liberty suffers from certain shortcomings, likely due to its limited lenght and all-inclusive viewpoint, I believed its fast-reading, simple style addresses an area mostly forgotten by libertarian/classical liberals advocates: beginners and general education on liberty.

I am Spanish and I see with sadness the lack of education on freedom and free-market ideas in my country, which reinforces the socialist bias of the Spaniards. That is why I volunteer to translate this booklet into Spanish for free. I have contacted the Adam Smith Institute to see whether they are happy with this offer. I'll let you know its progress.

E-book brings revolution to the book industry

Escolar can't understand what Wikipedia means

Statist Ignacio Escolar: "[Wikipedia] shows a great truth: that, against what capitalism has always claimed, it's not true that people act for money only."

En español abajo.

First: I would like to be introduced to Mr Capitalism because I can't find his books anywhere. Those who think of themselves as infallible usually use very generic ideas, so they can't be counter-argumented for the simple reason that one doesn't know what they mean: what is "capitalism"?

Writing fool comments such as the one above is free of charge, but solves nothing. If Escolar wanted average intelligent people to take him seriously, he should have said: "Wikipedia shows that what Mr Whoever proposes in their book X (date: Y) is wrong". Otherwise reading Escolar's comments are a waste of time.

Second: Free-marketeers don't claim that people act only for money, but for their own interests whatever they are. People (rather, individuals) act in the pursuit of satisfaying a specific motivation, may this be buying a car or being able to go to sleep fast. Poor, jelous people such as Ignacio Escolar either think that everyone is like them or don't want to understand (due to their own interests).

Wikipedia shows exactly what statists can't grasp, i.e., the free market, a set of voluntary actions, exchanges and arrangements not centrally planned are the most efficient source of knowledge and welfare.

++++++
